Dial-up - installation (Windows ME)
This walkthrough outlines how to get your computer, using Windows ME, connected to the Internet using a regular dial-up modem.
Step 1: Open Dial-up Networking
- Double-click the My Computer icon located on your desktop.
- Double-click Control Panels.
- Double-click Dial-up Networking.
Step 2: Create a Dial-up Networking connection
- Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
- You will be prompted to Type a Name for the computer you are dialing, type TELUS Internet. This will be the name of the new connection you're creating.

Ensure that your dialup modem is displayed in the Select a device drop down list.

- Click Next.
- You will then be prompted to "Type the phone number for the computer you want to call." Type your local access number in the field provided, as shown in Figure 2. If you do not know your local access number, refer to our list.
NOTE: If you subscribe to Call Waiting on your phone line, ensure that it is disabled. If this feature is not disabled while you're connected to the Internet, an incoming call will disconnect the modem. To disable Call Waiting, see How to disable Call Waiting below.

- Click Next.

Click the Finish button.

Step 3: Edit the TELUS Internet Connection
- From the Dial-up Networking window double-click the new TELUS Internet icon.

Click the Properties button.

Remove the check mark from Use area code and Dialing Properties.

Click on the Networking tab, ensure that only Enable software compression and TCP/IP have check marks beside them.

- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button in the bottom right hand corner.

Ensure that both Server Assigned IP Address and Server Assigned Name Server Addresses are selected.

- Click OK twice or until you are back at the TELUS Connect To window.
- Enter your username and password. Your username is the first part of your e-mail address preceding the @ symbol; for example, username@telus.net.

When you're ready to connect to the Internet click the Connect button.

How to disable Call Waiting
If you subscribe to Call Waiting on your phone line, ensure that it is disabled. If this feature is not disabled while you're connected to the Internet, an incoming call will disconnect the modem.
To disable Call Waiting for the duration of your dial-up connection, add *70 before the local access number in your dial-up connection.
