Wireless Networking - installation (Windows 2000)

TELUS Wireless Networking enables you to access the Internet without cables from virtually anywhere in your home. If you have multiple computers and devices, you can also use it to set up a wired or wireless home network and share devices and files among all your computers.

Follow the instructions below to configure your main computer for wireless access or to begin setting up a home network using Windows 2000.

Before you begin

Ensure your TELUS High Speed Internet Kit has been installed according to the instructions in the box. You'll also need your TELUS High Speed Install Wizard CD to complete this operation.

Step 1: Run the installation wizard

  1. If you plan to connect more than one computer, please choose which one you want to be the primary or main computer within your home network.
  2. Insert the CD from your TELUS High Speed Internet Kit into your primary computer. Follow the prompts.

Step 2: Complete the configuration for the primary computer

  1. Once the installation wizard is complete, click the Start button on your computer.
  2. Choose Settings and Control Panel.
  3. Double-click System.
  4. Click the Network Identification tab.
  5. Enter a unique name for your computer in the Computer Name field. This is how your computer will be identified on the network. For example, if your computer is located in another room such as a den you can call it "Den".
      NOTE:
    • This name can not be assigned to any of your other computers.
    • Ensure the Computer Name is eight characters or less with no spaces.
  6. Click the Properties button and ensure that Workgroup is selected (not Domain).
  7. Now click into the Workgroup field and enter a workgroup name, for example MyNetwork. This is the name of your home network and must be set up the same way for every computer.
  8. Click OK twice.
  9. You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD; please do so.
  10. Once the computer has completed copying files it will prompt you to restart.
  11. Click OK.
