Everything you need to know about energy savings events

TELUS SmartEnergy
is an innovative energy management platform designed to help you save on your monthly energy bills.
Energy savings events are an integral part of this exciting new service – offering the chance to earn valuable TELUS Reward points in exchange for reducing your energy consumption during peak hours.
Peak hours are when electricity consumption is the highest, putting strain on the grid. By participating in energy savings events, you’ll be helping to reduce energy use during peak hours, which will contribute to a reduction in demand on the grid, a reduced need for additional energy infrastructure, and ultimately, a lower energy bill over time.

What is an energy savings event?

Energy savings events typically happen during peak hours which are between 4pm - 8:30pm (in your local timezone).

You can choose which devices are opted in or out of each event, so that your previously scheduled activities or lifestyle requirements aren’t interrupted. Here’s how each device is impacted:
Smart plugs: Opted-in smart plugs will automatically turn off when the event begins and power back up again when the event is over.
Smart thermostat: Opted-in smart thermostats will lower their temperature by 2 degrees when in heat mode or will turn off in cool mode. When the event is over, the smart thermostat will automatically return to its previous set point.

How often do energy savings events take place?

On average, there is one energy savings event per week, and each energy savings event is approximately one hour long.
If you have notifications enabled in your SmartHome+ app, you’ll receive a notification one day prior to the energy savings event and a second reminder shortly before the event begins.

How do I participate?

It’s easy to take part in energy savings events. Here’s how:
  1. Make sure your smart devices are opted in to the energy savings events. By default, all your connected devices will be automatically opted in.
  2. Make sure that you have notifications enabled in the SmartHome+ app so that you're aware of upcoming events.
  3. Let your smart devices do the work while you watch your TELUS Coins and TELUS Rewards points add up!

Do I have to participate?

No. You can choose to opt your connected smart devices in or out to each energy savings event. But the more you participate, the more TELUS Rewards you can earn!

How many TELUS Coins or TELUS Rewards can I earn?

Every smart device that you opt in to participate in an energy savings event will earn you TELUS Coins. At the end of each day, your TELUS Coins are automatically converted to TELUS Rewards points and added to your TELUS Rewards account.
For every 1,000 TELUS Coins you earn, you'll receive 1 TELUS Reward point where 1 TELUS Reward point equals to $1 that you can spend on anything in our

TELUS Rewards can be redeemed for contest entries, gift cards, charitable donations and more!
