TELUS Indigenous Advisory Council overview

“Indigenous Peoples have struggled for 150+ years due to the imposition of the written system on our traditional oral system. Through understanding Indigenous Ways, I believe Reconciliation can be achieved. I’m happy TELUS is looking in the direction of Reconciliation while learning from Indigenous knowledge. Their understanding of our ways will make it so that their goals and our goals as Indigenous Peoples are the same.”
- Elder Reg Crowshoe, former Piikani First Nation Chief, Treaty 7

Mandate

At TELUS, we understand that each Indigenous community has unique needs, which is why we are seeking ongoing feedback from Indigenous community members and subject matter experts through the establishment of an Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC). This approach is in alignment with the feedback we received from Indigenous Peoples and ensures we are able to appropriately implement actions.
The Indigenous Advisory Council is a non-partisan advisory council with the following mandate:
  1. Monitor the progress of TELUS’ Indigenous strategies
  2. Provide guidance and advice for effective implementation of TELUS’ commitments and targets outlined in the annual Indigenous Reconciliation and Connectivity Report and internal Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plans
The Indigenous Advisory Council will meet twice a year and members are responsible for reviewing the information presented, sharing relevant insights and making recommendations to support implementation and accountability of TELUS’ Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan (IRAP). Ad hoc meetings or engagements may be convened based on need.

Structure

The Indigenous Advisory Council will be comprised of up to ten members based on criteria of:
  • Indigenous representation (i.e. First Nations, Métis and Inuit)
  • Experience in fields relevant to TELUS’ action plan (e.g. technology, health, agriculture)
  • Gender parity and geographic representation across TELUS’ incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) territory
  • Alignment with TELUS values and strategic vision
Members will be recruited and vetted by the Indigenous Reconciliation & Connectivity Team and Council members and appointed by the Indigenous Advisory Council Co-Chairs.
The Indigenous Advisory Council will be supported by the Indigenous Reconciliation & Connectivity Team and co-chaired by two TELUS representatives.
