Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our daily lives, from voice assistants like Siri and Alexa to personalized recommendations on streaming platforms and travel planning advice from Chat GPT. As we take advantage of the benefits that come with AI, including a space for practicing critical thinking, providing creative inspiration and time savings, as adults, it's just as important that we take time to better understand AI - including not only what it is and how it helps us, but also what it isn’t, and the privacy and ethical considerations surrounding it.

To learn more Jake Mossop, Content Creator and TELUS Wise® advocate sat down with Sarah Habibi, STEM Content Creator and Elissa Strome, Executive Director of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, Canadian Institute For Advanced Research (CIFAR) to chat about all things artificial intelligence.

  • Navigating the future: Ethics, critical thinking and privacy in the age of AI. AI enables users to create content much more quickly and easily, increasing the risk of misinformation. It is important to evaluate all AI-generated information with these tips.
    • Always identify the facts being presented to you. Are there potential biases? Is there room for misinformation?
    • Cross check information. Do other sources say the same thing? Is there conflicting information?
    • Use fact-checking websites to validate the facts. Examples include Snopes.com or Factcheck.org, or you could even do a reverse Google image search.
    • Consider all the information you’ve gathered. Do the facts seem reasonable? Remember that just because one fact is true, it doesn’t mean that they all are.
    • To learn more watch this video.

We all have a role to play in helping youth learn more about artificial intelligence, including what it is, what it’s capable of - and importantly, what it’s not. In addition to watching the panel discussion, also check out the new TELUS Wise responsible AI workshop, developed in collaboration with CIFAR. CIFAR hosts Canada’s Destination AI, a free online course for youth and adults where you can learn even more about what artificial intelligence is and how it impacts Canadians.
