At the beginning of every year, I think it's a good exercise to take some time to reflect on what's essential to being great at doing what you do -- things that can often get lost in the day to day between your regular sprint cadences and Kanban board reviews. Taking a moment to reset and refocus, and to look for areas on where you can continue to improve whether it's in your work or in your personal life can be super beneficial.

Here's a list of 10 things that I plan to continue keeping in focus as a Product Manager at TELUS Digital in 2023:

  1. Understand your customers: Conduct regular market research and actively seek feedback to have a deep understanding of your customers' needs.

  2. Set clear goals: Clearly define and set measurable goals for your products. This will help you stay on track and make data-driven decisions.

  3. Continuously test and iterate: Experiment with different approaches and constantly test and iterate on your ideas to improve and optimize them.

  4. Communicate effectively: Build strong relationships with your team, stakeholders, and customers by communicating effectively and regularly.

  5. Prioritize: Prioritize your tasks and features based on their potential impact and the resources required to implement them.

  6. Be data-driven: Use data and metrics to make informed decisions and track the performance of your products.

  7. Be adaptable: Stay agile and be prepared to pivot your strategy when needed, based on market trends and feedback.

  8. Be a leader: Lead by example, inspire your team, and make sure everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals.

  9. Stay organized: Keep your projects and tasks organized and maintain a clear roadmap for your products.

  10. Never stop learning: Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and best practices, and continuously develop your skills and knowledge as a product manager.

P.S. Big emphasis on #10 -- investing in yourself nets you arguably the best ROI outside of buying AAPL stock in the 90s... so why do we so often neglect this? It's NEVER too late to learn.
