Smart Hub Fixed Home Internet Traffic Management over LTE

Wireless Internet Traffic Management Policy - effective as of December 12, 2018

What is the TELUS Smart Hub Internet Traffic Management policy?

TELUS manages Internet traffic on small portions of our wireless network to ensure our customers have the best Internet experience possible during cell tower congestion.

What this means for you

This policy only impacts a small number of Smart Hub customers in communities where demand for Internet usage is greater than the available network capacity.

Only at times of congestion, a small number of customers using the most bandwidth will be affected and may notice slower speeds. This will allow us to provide both our Smart Hub and mobile wireless customers consistent and reliable Internet speeds.

At TELUS, we are continually investing in our networks and are working hard to alleviate congestion from all affected communities. We know a reliable Internet experience matters to you, and we’re on a continuous journey to provide you with the best service possible.

Why is TELUS applying this traffic management policy?

Canadians are relying on the Internet for more and more of their communications and entertainment needs. At TELUS, we’ve experienced this trend firsthand and witnessed Internet traffic increase rapidly as customers enjoy increasing amounts of HD video and interactive content online. We understand that our customers want reliable access to high quality Internet and invest heavily in our networks every year.

We are continually investing in our networks and are working hard to keep pace with demand and alleviate congestion from all affected communities. In select areas of heavy Smart Hub use, we may manage Internet traffic during peak periods to avoid inconsistent quality and service across our mobile network.

We’ve put this change in place because we want all of our customers to have a great Internet experience.

How does this policy impact Internet traffic?

We manage Internet traffic by identifying congestion on portions of our network. Only at time of congestion, TELUS will redistribute network capacity across our wireless network by temporarily reducing the speed of the few heavy Smart Hub users who occupy the most traffic bandwidth. This will provide better speeds to the majority of other customers. This ensures that Internet capacity is distributed fairly amongst all users of our wireless network.

This measure treats all types of Internet traffic used by the affected Smart Hub users equally. It does not discriminate by content or application.

Does this change impact me?

Most customers should not experience any change. This policy only impacts a small number of our customers in communities where demand for Internet usage is greater than the available network capacity.
